CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Twilight Sparkle
CANON: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
CANON REFERENCE: Clicky
AGE: 14
GENDER: Female
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: HS1
APPEARANCE: Twilight at Institute is a young girl with warm dark skin and blue-black hair with two streaks: one purple and one pink. She's on the shorter side of average for her age and fairly skinny.
PERSONALITY: Twilight can be best summed up with the phrase "obnoxious know-it-all bookworm." At least, in the most simplistic sense. She devours books like candy, and as such has amassed a huge font of knowledge, which she will never hesitate to offer up if the slightest opportunity presents itself. She doesn't mean to be obnoxious, but she does have a tendency to be very blunt in correcting her friends and classmates, or spouting more information about a given subject than anybody needed or wanted to know.
See, although she has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of topics from aeronautics to zoology, she has very little concept of how to interact with other people. Maybe it comes from spending her formative years in her room with a stack of books rather than out on the playground with other children, or maybe it's just part of who she is. In any case, though polite to a fault, most times the social niceties that come naturally to many simply escape Twilight's understanding. In this way she can come off as bossy, blunt, or condescending, when she thinks she is just being matter-of fact.
Even so, Twilight isn't always all work and no play. Though it can take her a while to open up to them, she's very loyal and devoted to the friends she does have, and always does her best to best to help them out in a crisis. She also enjoys trying new things, even if it is only after having read about it first. She is incredibly eager and exciteable, to the point of literally jumping for joy when she solves a difficult problem or hears some especially good news.
On the other hand, if things aren't going well, Twilight has a tendency to get extremely anxious. Her mind often jumps to worst-case scenarios, even highly improbable ones, when it seems like she won't be able to get something done. She's a bit of a perfectionist, and her perfectionism often lends itself to her anxiety, in that she feels the need to have everything just so or she will fail/others will dislike her, when in reality the things she worries about are often not a big deal to others.
Twilight is also a skeptic, refusing to believe anything for which she doesn't have demonstrated evidence. While she trusts books and their words implicitly, word-of-mouth from others is subject to extreme scrutiny, especially if it doesn't sound like anything she's heard before. Even seeing something unbelievable for herself, if there isn't a readily available explanation, she will continue to disbelieve it.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Teleportation and telekinesis. Twilight can teleport herself over short distances, along with any objects she is carrying (up to a certain extent). She hasn't as yet attempted to teleport another person, although she has done it with small animals. Twilight can also manipulate objects within a certain radius (roughly twenty feet in any direction), as long as she knows the exact location of the object (so, she can affect objects that she can't see, but only if she knows where they are). The further away an object is or the larger it is, the more effort it takes to lift, but she can nevertheless lift objects that would be well outside her capacity to carry physically. On the other hand, she can only raise an object to a height of about eight feet at most. Both powers take a substantial amount of energy, so attempting to teleport several times in a row, or over a very long distance, as well as levitating an object for an extended period of time, will wear her out and eventually make her unable to use her powers again until she's rested up. She cannot teleport along with an object that she is levitating.
AU HISTORY: Twilight was born to a loving family (perhaps with slightly quirky naming traditions), a mom, a dad, and an older brother. She was very close with all of them, but that was about the extent of her socialization. By the age of two she had learned to read simple words, and by five she had long since graduated from See Spot run to The Incredible Journey. And once she started reading, she simply didn't stop. Though they were slightly concerned about her reluctance to make friends with other children, her parents were very proud of their daughter's aptitude.
The trouble started when Twilight started school. She excelled in every subject, with the exception of "plays well with others." Twilight soon became a favorite target of the other children, who teased her for her bookishness and being teacher's pet. Her teachers tried to help as best they could, but things were difficult for Twilight. Still, her love of school propelled her forward, as did the knowledge that her brother, her hero and protector, was somewhere at school with her, and with him there nothing truly bad could happen.
Unfortunately, as Twilight and her classmates grew older, the teasing grew meaner. Her older brother eventually moved on to junior high, and Twilight drew deeper and deeper into her shell. Her parents began to consider withdrawing her from the school for her own well-being, but Twilight begged and pleaded for them to let her stay-- she loved her teachers so dearly. Instead, they made an arrangement with the principl to let Twilight stay in the library during recess, which was just fine by her!
One day, however, when Twilight was about ten, a group of students surrounded her outside the school after classes, refusing to let her pass and be on her way home. Scared for her safety, and not sure how she would get out of this, Twilight could only wish that she was back home, safe in her bed with her books.
And then, suddenly, she was.
Startled and disoriented, Twilight ran screaming down the stairs to her parents, to whom she quickly explained just what had happened. In retelling the story, though, her mind started to click through its stores of knowledge, recalling something she had read about in the newspapers, though she hadn't understood the politics. "Do you think I could be a mutant?"
At this point, Twilight's parents felt they had no choice but to pull her out of school after all, hiring a private tutor who was familiar with Homo sapiens superior. It was expensive, but they were very supportive of their daughter, especially in a world they realized was becoming increasingly stacked against her. Fortunately, TWilight loved her tutor even more than the school librarian, and flourished under he guidance. She began to learn to control her teleportation ability, and soon found out that she also had the power to levitate objects a short distance. Naturally she quickly busied herself reading all the literature she could get her hands on about mutants and mutant powers.
When she reached the proper age, Twilight asked her parents to be enrolled at the Xavier institute. As much as she loved the teacher she had, she had done enough research to know that she would truly recieve the best education at a school specifically set up for people like her. Promising she would write at every opportunity, Twilight set off for New York.
SAMPLE
1ST PERSON SAMPLE: Musebox post.
THIRD PERSON SAMPLE: For the past week, Twilight had buried herself in the library (well, moreso than usual), which fortunately enough didn't seem to have been a target of the Brotherhood's attack. There had to be something there she could use-- something that would be valuable to those looking to end the conflict between mutants and non-mutants.
The only thing was, she didn't exactly know what she was looking for.
For Twilight, there was no problem that couldn't be solved by the skillful application of knowledge. Therefore, if she only had more knowledge about the X-gene or mutants themselves, she was sure she would be able to find the answer. But what kind of knowledge was she looking for? The fears of non-mutants were easy enough to understand, even if she didn't support them-- people had always feared things they could not control or understand. The solution would be to provide a fuller education to the general public, to demonstrate that mutants were people just like them, who had never asked to be born that way.
But what about the Brotherhood? She simply couldn't understand their motivations. Not only were they increasing the public's fear and mistrust of mutants, they were creating divisions within the mutant community itself. What did they have to gain by attacking Xavier's? Aside from a distraction to kidnap Senator Kelly... it didn't make sense. Just what were they trying to do?
